Here are the best places to see the fall colors in California. For a state known to only have one season, there are incredible locations that host all the amazing seasons for us to enjoy! Scroll to the end to find out when the best times to visit are to soak in all the gorgeous foliage! You won’t want to miss these places on your quest to finding California’s best fall colors.
The Best Places To See Fall Colors In California
June Lake Loop
This entire area is literally breathtaking, full of all the fantastic colors fall has to offer! There are 4 lakes in the loop each with its own unique view and charm. Nestled in between Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes, it is the perfect mini trip and pit stop on your journey!
McGee Creek – Mammoth Lakes
Unbeknownst from the stark landscape of highway 395 lies McGee Creek just a short drive away hiding some of the most amazing fall colors California has to offer! This gem is definitely worth the stop and less trafficked too. Don’t miss out on seeing this electric fall colors spot!
Yosemite National Park
Although most of the trees are evergreen, there are still a few that aren’t and the dried leaves and grass give us that fall feel! There is a crispness in the air during fall and, although the waterfalls are dried up, the view of the trees and mountains are incredible.
Tuolumne Meadows – Yosemite National Park
Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park is a vast and gorgeous meadow on the way out (or in) of the park. The landscape is something that is worth pulling over for and admiring the serenity.
Convict Lake
Along with the fall foliage, take advantage of the great hikes Convict Lake has to offer. This Eastern Sierra gem has crystal clear waters and is surrounded by majestic mountains ranges.
Bishop Creek Canyon
There are three major lakes within the canyon including South Lake, North Lake, and Lake Sabrina. Each area has their own trails and surrounding lakes. So, make sure to carve out some time to explore the foliage and see all the Eastern Sierra wonder.
Best Time of Year to Go: My recommendation is the 2nd or 3rd weeks of October. I went October 13-15, 2018 and the leaves were prime then! I highly recommend checking this site to plan your California fall colors trip – I used it and the site helped me plan out the best weekend to go 🙂 Also, check out Mono County’s official website for their fall foliage map & guide.
